The artists' talk was very interesting - though the gathering was small, I think the conversation was the kind we all say we want to engage in. Viewers made comments such as: the lenticular Barbies are more mermaid-like; the Barbies are creepy and funny at the same time; the blonde Barbie remiinds one of a Hitchcock film, as we know he always cast blondes, be they Janet Leigh, Grace Kelly or Tippi Hedren. Lynn Rhoda showed us how her sculpture with the Virgin actually opened up to reveal pages from a 1900 book for women on how to attract men, and Ginnie Lupi described the multiple levels one can engage in when viewing/playing with her colorforms. We had an interesting discussion about the use of language in visual art, and Tom's observation that Ginnie's figures were clear semaphores - language being unnecessary.
